第27回優秀賞a key role in furthering political change and promoting sustainable developmentpolicies. Many NGOs in South America have been teaching pregnant women aboutmaternal health problems, and such teachings have resulted in reduced infantmortality. The United Nations authorities recognized the increasingly importantrole of the NGOs and civil society organizations (CSOs) around the world. 24 SeveralNGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC have taken the lead in facilitating andcontributing to the vast relief efforts in Southeast-Asia and Africa after the horribleearthquake and tsunami that devastated the region in December 2004. In severalstatements, former Secretary-General Kofi Annan has commended the tireless workof NGOs in the relief effort. These NGOs include the Friends Society in Social Service,Foundation Nour, All India Women’s Education Fund Association, Medecins sansFrontieres, All India Movement for SEVA and Istanbul International Brotherhoodand Solidarity Association. Examples of these NGO work include the collection andtransportation of humanitarian goods to Sri Lanka and India by the Friends Society inSocial Service, coordination of medical services and treatment in almost every affectedregion by Medecins sans Frontieres, and the ambitious establishment of a permanenthumanitarian coordination outpost in Banda Ache province, Indonesia by IstanbulInternational Brotherhood and Solidarity Association. These NGOs and many moreare working with Governments and international agencies in the affected regions asthe relief effort responds to the crisis and the needs of millions of lives. 25The article 26 discusses when and how NGOs succeed in making positive contributionsto international negotiations, in ways that governments are not able or willing to doas well alone.
