第17回奨励賞scale, we aren’t doing too badly. No one is aiming nuclear weapons at each other, atleast not officially, and there aren’t currently any major wars occurring. The biggestloss of life from battles is coming from issues such as the religious strife in the MiddleEast, or other small skirmishes. Even these have been lessening in the past few years,though.The UN was founded, according to the Charter,‘to maintain international peaceand security, to develop friendly relations among nations, to cooperate in solvinginternational problems and in promoting respect for human rights’. As the first item,international peace and security, is slowly but surely seeing headway, the UnitedNations will begin to see an increase in resources that can be allocated to otherimportant causes. Perhaps as the threat of violence lessens more funding will becomeavailable to help our ailing planet, which is, in my opinion, currently the largestproblem of all. Research into such fields as sustainable development, renewableenergy sources, low-emission motors, population control, and other such areas ofstudy would benefit not only the planet, but also help the UN in its humanitarian andinternational efforts. Take, for example, a small village in a developing country. We’llcall it Chechlib. Say that Chechlib is just getting its feet wet in terms of agriculture.As an added hardship the ground is fairly unstable, in terms of soil richness, andneeds rigorous maintenance to keep producing year after year. Chechlib is much morelikely to thrive and expand if they have the technology of sustainable development inagriculture, which would allow them to nurture the soil while it produces for them,and ensure a good harvest year after year. The UN currently has a branch workingon sustainable development, born a few years ago as the result of the UNCEDconference in 1992. It has made a good deal of headway in just 8 years. I believethat in this century the awareness of people around the world will begin to peak, in79
