The following statements can be made regarding the methods of implementing interculturaldialogue. 371.Inter-culturaldialoguerequiresparticipatoryapproaches.2. Meaningful dialogue is more important than the application of participatorymethods.3.Thediversitywithinthecommunitiesshouldbetakenintoaccount.4. A variety of appropriate (verbal and non-verbal) communication methods,including traditional and modem methods should be employed. 385. Tools must be appropriate in terms of:? Costs to local people? Local capacity to maintain information management systems? Relevance and effectiveness? Comprehensibility across culturesAlthough this is not an exhaustive list, in practice“inter-cultural dialogue”shouldtakesuchformsas:1. Informal peace and tolerance education initiatives within the boundariesof neighborhood communities to promote inter-community tolerance andconfidence building. These should be included in conventional curricula in Post-Soviet Central Asia, or in community-based girls’education in Afghanistan,whereparentshavenormallyrejectedconventionalschools.2. Neighborhood community-based dialogue and civil society education to actuallyput inter-cultural dialogue into practice. These would consist, for example, ofcross-bordervillageexchangesandcommunity-baseddiscussionclubs.3. Local government initiatives to engage the population in peace and tolerancepromotion.
