The mixed results aside, these developments underline a finetrait the UN possesses, namely the capability to adapt and innovate in order to meetrising challenges. Such a capability gives hope that the UN would be able to performits tasks well, hence contributes to the betterment of humankind in the comingmillennium.This essay will discuss how adaptability and innovation might be useful in helpingthe UN to resolve ethnic conflict, which -- as recent trends suggest -- constitutes oneof the most pressing and grave humanitarian problems. The Essay will first look atthe imperatives for the UN's engagement, and proceed to discuss the framework forits actions. Finally, the Essay will identify the measures and mechanisms to make theUN's involvement timely, effective and evenhanded, and for the solutions to be lastingand respected by all parties concerned.THE IMPERATIVES: A Global & Fragmenting WorldAmong the most important guides for the UN's actions are knowing the reasonsfor its involvement, and when it must get involved, to be very clear about its ownlimitations and strength. These guides may seem simple. Putting them into practice,however, is not always easy. The chief reason for this is the changing nature of theworld situation and, consequently, the issues at hand.The world's political, economic, and social and cultural landscapes are constantlychanging.
