第13回佳作his visit to UNU Headquarters in February 1993, UNU should be the think tank ofthe United Nations. UNU is probably the only UN Organization that has the mostextensive network of cooperating universities, scholars, research centers, and otheracademic, political and economic partnering organizations. In order to carry out theSecretary General’s desire, UNU must not only generate information, but be able toeffectively distribute the information.UNU conducts seminars, conferences, research studies, symposia, and etc, whichresult in many research papers, books, working papers and other publications. Thesepublications are then distributed (some for sale, most for free) to governments,libraries, universities, and others to aid in research and policy formulation.As with any organization whose intellectual property is its product, innovativedistribution mechanisms must be implemented to create a high level of visibility, lowcost and accurate distribution, and efficient availability for its information.In all fairness, UNU has indeed begun to use technology as a dissemination tool,such as its WEB page; however, more can and must be done.The problemOne problem that businesses face ? is that the availability of the products ? beit intellectual property, sushi, or cars ? that they produce are either not known bypotential and current customers who want the goods, or if the customers are aware ofthe availability of the goods, then the business has problems distributing those neededgoods to customers in a timely fashion. UNU has these problems.Much of the world community is not familiar with the name United NationsUniversity, and much less with the work of UNU.Much of the UNU’s scholarly discussion and research results is carried out in487
