As recent challenges of the UN have shown, the UN neither fullyknows itself nor its enemy. It is at a critical juncture in which it must re-define bothits own role as a crisis manager in preventive diplomacy, peacemaking and peacekeepingand face new challenges from its members in the post-cold war internationalsetting. Without a clear, coherent and unified strategy, the UN’s worst enemy willcontinue to be itself. It’s members will fail to seize the historical opportunity inherentin any organizational crisis: the opportunity for fundamental change and breakthrough.As the United Nations commemorates its 50th anniversary it has become acutelyaware of this historical opportunity for renewal.
