For yearscomplaints of waste and mismanagement have been lodged by UN members. TheUS, in particular, has registered many complaints. The US is the largest UN financialcontributor. All organizations have their troublesand hindrances. Since the UN’s fiftieth anniversary is rapidly approaching, anopportunity to redress these issues is especially tempting and timely. What isrequired is an honest, open self assessment. It should be conducted as a businessmight conduct its own self assessment. Executive-level representatives shouldidentify a“corporate”strategy and vision for the UN during its next fifty years. Thisvision should include what roles and responsibilities the UN will tackle within thattimeframe. Following that, directives should be issued to a coterie who will conducta typical SWOT ? Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats ? analysis. TheUN must decide upon its“core competencies”and forge a framework to build uponthose competencies.
