The unique triple-crisis of a 9.0 Earthquake, massive tsunami and nuclearpower plant meltdown, unprecedented even in Japan’s long history of naturaldisasters, claimed the largest number of casualties in Japan since the end of the WorldWar II and spawned a very real fear of a new and all-encompassing existential threat.It was the first time that humanity has faced the three interrelated challenges ofearthquake, tsunami and also the potential for nuclear fallout on a level not seen sincethe Chernobyl crisis. While such a disaster might have overwhelmed most developingcountries, it nonetheless presented a crucial test even for a country as developed andtechnologically advanced as Japan.The Great East Japan Earthquake 3that struck T?hoku was therefore unlikeanything previously experienced in human history.
