Thetraumatic events of 911 amply illustrate the unique dichotomy of the new millenniumbursting to the open all the diverse and opposing traits that characterise our fickleworld. Globalisation holds both promise and peril in dealing with global insecurity.Unless we can balance equitable and sustainable economic growth with matchingopportunities for education and learning to prevent marginalisation of communities orcountries conflicts will remain our lot.Much of the insecurity that exists in this world arises from poverty and poverty hasits roots in illiteracy. The Education For All- 2000 1 Assessment shows about 600 millionchildren do not have any form of early childhood education, some 113 million haveno access to primary schooling, and at least 880 million adults are Illiterate.
