Finally, NGOs played a critical rolein drafting parts of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and are now playinga leading role in the Comprehensive and Integral International Convention on theProtection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities.In addition, there many other NGO's working in grass-root level to empowerpeople. For example, the Sri Sri Ravishankar's Art of Living Foundation (AOLF), amulti-faceted, not-for-profit educational and humanitarian NGO with a presence in over140 countries that works in special consultative status with the Economic and SocialCouncil of the United Nations has established number of projects in rural India. 29 Asa way to find permanent solution to the farmer crisis and poverty, AOLF startedprocess of adopting 3000 villages all over India for overall development. As a first stepthey have succeeded in 25 villages in Maharashtra and 12 villages in Gujarat states ofIndia. 307.NGOs and EnvironmentNGO participation has increased in many areas of international law including,human rights, labor, religion, education, and the environment. They also agreedthat increased scientific knowledge and understanding is an essential component toprotecting the environment. The contribution of NGOs in these areas has alreadyimpacted the legal and political climate of international law. 31NGOs are able tocapitalize on their scientific resources and relative freedom from political affiliation toperform several distinct functions within these windows of participation.
