第18回佳作“For a more active UN and UNU(addressing peaceand development)”Gabor Bakos1. Introduction(Peace)Although even not so long ago many considered the UN as unable to actresolutely in crisis situations and some even wanted to dissolve the UN as a uselessand money-consuming institution, the war in Yugoslavia or the recent war againstterrorism drew again the attention to the important role of UN in peace activities.Without the active contribution of UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan it would havebeen impossible to reach an international coordination in settling the Afghan war andin preparing the plans for Afghanistan’s reconstruction. Therefore, today probablythe most important role of the UN is to promote peace in the world for which itmust enhance its international coordination activities, through many channels ofcommunication between various regions and nations, in order to reach a bettermutual understanding world wide. If nations and regions will better know each otherand if they will come to understand each other’s problems and conditions, hostilitywill give its place to mutual understanding and help. In this process a vital element iseducation.Peace and education, knowledge are closely interrelated. Peace is theindispensable condition for normal human life and activity, without which no progressin social, cultural or economic development can be achieved. Peace is not a passivestate, not a result of refraining from any activity interfering with other people, nationsor countries, but it is the result of actively learning more and more about each other163
