第18回佳作4.3 Practicing peace educationOne primary school in West Jerusalem is well known for practicing peaceeducation. The name of the school is“Neve Shalom/Wahat Al-Salam Primary School”which means oasis of peace. The school was established in 1979. In 2001, the schoolhad 270 students, and 28 administrative and teaching staff’members of both Jewishand Palestinian origin(http://nswas.com/sfp/introduction.htm). The number ofstudents who want to learn at this school is increasing every year. The increaseshows that people’s consciousness of peace education is rising. This school is located in a village called“Peace Village”, which practices peacefulcoexistence. Both Arabs and Jews reside in the village and share a common ideal ofliving together peacefully.According to Feuerverger(2001), the purpose of building the Peace Village is“to create a social, cultural, and political framework of equality and mutual respectfor the residents while maintaining the cultural heritage, language, and identity ofeach individual.”Maintaining personal, social, national and linguistic identities isimportant and a basic need in any society. In Particular, bilingual and biculturaleducation is adopted in the curriculum. In order to achieve coexistence betweenpeople, knowing the other’s culture and way of thinking is necessary. Hebrew is thedominant language in the Israeli society. Arabic and Hebrew are similar. If childrenstart learning these two languages from early childhood, communication will be easyin daily life. To pursue mutual communication, writing and reading skills are alsonecessary. Therefore, bilingual education is most important in the school curriculum. The students use both Arabic and Hebrew languages and learn about both Araband Jewish cultures. In addition, representing the values of Arabs and Jews is veryimportant in education for achieving mutual respect.153
