4.2 Peace education and global educationWhat do people need for realizing peace? It is education that is able to givehope for the future. Education has the potential of changing people’s values andway of thinking. According to the Declaration on a Culture of Peace(preamble ofthe UNESCO Charter), it is stated:“since wars begin in the minds of men, it is inthe minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed”. In order to build aculture of peace, efforts are needed for creating new educational programs. However,Velloso(1998)wrote:“it would be naive to think that the education systems in theMiddle East could function inside an impenetrable bubble, in a world apart from thereal world.”There is a question of which target should be realized first, the peaceor the education for peace? Education is based on peaceful life, but it also has thepotential of making a peaceful society. Therefore, it is important to approach to peacefrom both politics and education.The United Nations has been actively working for helping Palestinian refugeesmainly as actions of UNRWA. Moreover, focused on supporting children’s education,UNICEF and UNESCO are working for improvement of basic human needs ofPalestinians. In Particular, Global Education started in 1992 in Syria, the first countryin the Middle East and North Africa(MENA)region to use it. It is conducted byUNICEF cooperating with the Ministry of Education, educators and teachers, etc. Thedefinition of Global Education is“...the empowerment of learners not only to criticallyunderstand the world’s realities in a holistic frame work, but also to move learners andteachers to act towards a more peaceful, just, and liberating world”(Swee-Hin, 1993;Sultana, 2001). 23 Therefore, in order to promote peace awareness, Global Education isexpected to help in realizing peace and promoting mutual understanding and respect.15223 Bringing the world into the classroom: global literacy and a question of paradigms, Global education, vol.1(l), p. 11.
