第18回佳作1.2 ObjectivesThe objective of this paper is to investigate two issues. The first is to analyzewhat have been taught to children about the Arab-Israeli conflict in school textbooksin the Palestinian Authority and Israel. The second is to investigate how the peaceprocess has had an impact on the school education system in both Arab countriesand Israel since the Oslo Accord. Then, the role of the United Nations University inpromoting peace/coexistence education is discussed. The contexts related to the Arab-Israeli conflict in the textbooks of thePalestinian Authority and Israel, all published after the peace negotiations started, are categorized according to three factors:(1)the description of the conflict,(2)religious factors of the conflict, and(3)sociopolitical factors of the conflict. Then, peaceeducation is examined. To investigate the textbooks, the reports translated fromArabic and Hebrew into English by The Center for Monitoring the Impact of Peace(CM1P)are used as the basic research materials. The CMIP is an NGO established inNew York in 1998 and its purpose is to encourage the development and fostering ofpeaceful relations between peoples and nations, by establishing a climate of toleranceand mutual respect founded on the rejection of violence as a means to resolvingconflicts.1.3 Review of literatureMuch research has been conducted on various aspects of’the Arab-IsraeliConflict. Some of the research in the field of education has focused on how theArab-Israeli conflict is handled in the education systems. However, the analysis ofschool textbooks in the Arab countries is a relatively new field and qualitative andquantitative data are scarce. Previous studies(Velloso, 1998; Al-Abbasi, 1999; Bar-133
