第18回佳作“The Arab-Israeli conflict and Peace Education - Roleof the United Nations University”Tomoko MatsudaAbstractThe Arab-Israeli conflict is one of the most serious and tragic problems that did notmake much progress toward peace during the twentieth century. The overviewof Arab-Israeli relations since 1948 demonstrates that political developmenttoward peace has not actually been fruitful on the societal level. There have beenseveral rebellions in both Arab and Israeli sides to show the social frustration anddissatisfaction against the peace at the political level. Under the conflict situation, eachgovernment in the Middle East has been using education as a tool for controlling thesociety by encouraging a mind setting in the young generation that fits its politicaltargets. School textbooks are used in all schools for all children, and the contentsbecome the common knowledge among them. Therefore, the contents of the schooltextbooks have an immeasurable influence on the children and can be manipulated forpolitical purposes by instilling the negative stereotypes images of the opponent.The objective of this paper is to investigate two issues. The first is to analyze whathave been taught to children about the Arab-Israeli conflict in school textbooks in thePalestinian Authority and Israel. The second is to investigate how the peace processhas had an impact on the school education system in both Arab countries and Israelsince the Oslo Accord.
