MochtanThis Essay discusses the imperatives and justifications for the United Nations(UN)to take the lead in resolving ethnic conflicts, which constitutes one of the mosturgent and grave problems to humankind. It also identifies the specific measuresand mechanisms the UN should undertake in the light of ethnic conflicts' charactersas fast emerging, unpredictable and essentially-domestic problems. The Essay firstlooks at the broad context in which these problems are taking place. This includesa dramatically changing political and socio-economic landscapes brought about bythe forceful trends present at this particular juncture of history, namely“hyperglobalization,”and concurrent with this, fragmentation. The Essay recognizes that thecombination of these trends makes events far more complex, hence demanding. In allthis, the Essay notes that the UN has no choice but to deliver concrete and immediateresults. At stake is not only the credibility of the organization; humanity itself isdirectly at risks.This Essay argues that the main strength of the UN lies in its adaptations andinnovations. It is owing to these capabilities that the UN has been able to overcomemany daunting tasks, often amidst glaring lack of resources and exaggeratedexpectations of the public. The same could be expected with regard to ethnic conflicts.The question is: what kind of adaptations and innovations the UN must undertake inorder to make its actions effective, timely and evenhanded.This Essay proposes effective preventive actions as the potential remedy.
